Matheson Hammock Yacht Club hosted a Summer Sailstice event over the summer solstice weekend, June 17-19, with other boaters worldwide, to celebrate the longest day of the year out on the water. We met up in Key Largo, FL after a 40 mile sail down Biscayne Bay and Card Sound to our anchorage in Blackwater Sound right off of US 1 at MM104.
The event was supported by Florida Yacht Group who supplied kayaks and paddle boards for the day’s activities and Jeanneau America who donated gift bags of goodies for the attendees. A total of 6 boats participated but a total of 37 people attended the dinner gathering at Jimmy Johnson’s Big Chill restaurant to watch the sunset over Blackwater Sound.
The weather mostly cooperated as the wind was good for a sail down from Miami about half way and the then it switched to the opposite direction on the return trip so we again had a good sail about half way back. We remained dry even though much of the Miami area was getting some major squalls. But that’s pretty normal for south Florida in June.
So overall, everyone had a good time and we are getting ready for next year.
